Hepatitis C and Alcohol:
Extremely Damaging to the Liver

By themselves, Hepatitis C and alcohol are extremely damaging to the liver .

When the mutating Hep C virus and blood toxins from alcohol are combined they can easily overwhelm any restorative power the liver possesses. This combination reduces our chances of survival radically.

Alcohol is one of five major factors that influence the rate of progression for liver disease resulting from the hepatitis C virus. The other four factors are age at infection, gender, co-infections, and fatty liver.

For the chronic drinker not hampered by having Hepatitis C, alcohol alone is a significant risk factor for developing alcoholic hepatitis and alcoholic cirrhosis of the liver.

Research reveals that the non-Hep C incessant drinker of alcohol is more prone to developing liver disease than the non-drinker with the Hep C virus.

Mixing Hepatitis C and Alcohol

If you mix Hepatitis C and alcohol you are 16 times more likely to develop cirrhosis of the liver than a non-drinker with Hepatitis C.

Hepatitis C and alcohol are a deadly duo!!

Alcohol has such a negative impact on Hepatitis C treatment success rates that medical professionals administering treatment delay treatment for those that have not yet started treatment or stop treatment for those that are discovered drinking during treatment.

The deadly duo, Hepatitis C and alcohol, can delay your critical treatment!

Treatment can be delayed for six months or longer to allow the body to recover from the damage resulting from the alcohol.

If you have Hepatitis C you should not drink anything with alcohol in it.

Alcohol consumption of less than 6 ounces per week will still elevate viral counts and increase the amount of fibrosis in the liver.

You should carefully read the labels of nonprescription products such cough medicines, mouthwashes, etc. to insure they do not contain alcohol.

Nonalcoholic beer, known in military circles as “near beer”, contains some alcohol.

What causes damage to the liver when alcohol is consumed?

The liver, in addition to playing a major role in metabolism, has roughly 500 functions to perform for the body, including glycogen storage, decomposition of red blood cells, plasma protein synthesis, and detoxification.

One of the liver’s 500 critical functions is to filter out all the poisonous substances in our blood. Without this essential filtering function our bodies would fill up with toxins and we would die.

Alcohol is one of many poisonous substances the liver filters from our blood. Filtering alcohol through the liver depletes the liver of glutathione, an important antioxidant that protects our cells from toxins such as free radicals.

Existing liver damage from HCV may be worsened by loss of glutathione due to alcohol use.

I trust by now you have a clear understanding that Hepatitis C and alcohol are not a good combination.

For many chronic alcohol drinkers, the simple act of acknowledging you have an alcohol problem is very difficult. Understandably, it’s even more difficult to ask for help.

For many, the outward acknowledgment of an alcohol problem is difficult. It is truly unfortunate that many with drinking problems must hit rock bottom before taking the first steps towards acknowledgement and help.

Removing alcohol from your life will have tremendous rewards for you.

The biggest reward, you "WILL" live a healthier life.

There are so many ways to start removing alcohol from your life.

The best was to start is to confide in a health care provider that can help you create a plan to remove alcohol from your life.
